Don’t Touch a Man’s Mixed Tapes

March 3, 2008 at 11:07 am | Posted in Family | 8 Comments

Hubby and I are alike in so many ways. One being we don’t like a lot of extra junk lying around the house.

Knick Knacks – no.

Shelf stuffers – no.

Random things that don’t have a purpose – no.

I can’t stand it. I need to be able to see where things are and able to get to things I need at a moments notice. It is the type A in me screaming to get out.

However, my serious need to rid my house of junk has gotten me in trouble.

I messed up. I messed up bad. I threw out Hubby’s mixed tapes.

I guess some things you just shouldn’t mess with. Mine being my hummus and hubby being his mixed tapes. I never knew something so silly would have hit such a nerve. I guess I need to be more mindful when I do my cleaning out.

A recent conversation:

Hubby: Have you seen my box of mixed tapes?

Me: Mixed tapes?

Hubby: Yeah, the old ones I made on my boom box when I was a teenager. (I forgot we called them that, so 90’s)

Me: The tapes that have nothing but hours of random 80’s radio on it?

Hubby: Yeah, my mixed tapes. Where are they?

Me: Why?

Hubby: I just want to know where they are. I might want to listen to them.

Me: Ok. Well, 1) How would you listen to them? Exactly when was the last time you saw a tape player? 2) Why would you want to do that? 3) Is it really that important to hear the original version of Beat It? I threw them out. I thought they were trash.

Hubby: (Eyes grow wide) Why? When?

Me: I don’t think I need a why, they were 80’s random radio mixed tapes. And when was about three years ago when you were in Iraq and I had hauled countless piles of your crap around for the fourth time when I moved to the second apartment and I refused to move countless piles of junk anymore. Since the place was only 500 square feet it was either room for me and Lily or the mixed tapes and other piles of crap.

Hubby: So you don’t know where they went?

Me: Oh, I know where they went, right in the trash compactor.

Hubby: Why would you do that?

Me: Why wouldn’t I do that? It was a mixed tape.

Hubby: But it was my tapes (pouts).

Me: Well, since it has been three years and you never asked for them before now I am guessing that they weren’t that big of a deal.

Hubby: But they were my mixed tapes. (looking crushed like he just lost his prized possession.)

Seriously, does this make me a bad wife?

Oy vey!

So, if anyone knows where I can get my hands on some random 80’s music without having to Itunes it just to say I am sorry please let me know!

  1. Hahahaha. Wow. Poor guy. But seriously…..if he just now noticed they were missing, I really don’t think you have to feel that bad. Our local library has CDs you can borrow, maybe yours does too? They always have good 80s music. Maybe you can go finda disc or two and burn him copies 🙂

  2. This made me laugh. I haven’t even seen a cassette tape since the 90s. I can make you a mix CD if you want.

  3. Oh, wow. Who could have thought? Haha.

I agree with Lisa. Make him some mix CDs of those songs!

  4. Haha, it’s funny what some people just can’t bear to part with. (Even if he was fine without them for SO long..)
    Wish I could help!

  5. Oh no! What a sad story! A little while ago a group of us military wives were talking about all of the things that we had tossed while our husbands were deployed–t-shirts, receipts and bank statements dating back to the mid 90s, etc–now your husband’s mixed tapes can be added to the list!

Also, isn’t it weird how their memories work? I wonder what sparked his desire to find them all of a sudden!

  6. Thanks ladies for all of the support, I feel better now!

Yes Lisa I would love a mixed CD! That would definetely get me out of my very own little dog house!

Angela, my husband is still in mourning over this awful sweatshirt I also chunked that he swears is irreplaceable! I threw away so much we will never know just how much he is missing!

  7. Sounds so much like J! He never wants to get rid of anything either. And his excuse is : Because it’s MINE!

I hope you get it sorted!

  8. oh now i must shamefully admit i have my husband’s box of late 80’s early 90’s mixed tapes in the garage. why, i wonder? I’m going to throw them away- what a stupid thing to have; you’re so right. maybe i should sell them on ebay. they’re one of a kind originals. Rick Dees, Casey Casem… Prince… The Cure…
